Defense Mastery: Base 1 to 2
Instructions
This simulation teaches the "Base 1 to Base2" defensive system, a two-stage approach to playing effective defense. It emphasizes reading the play and anticipating the opponent's attack. Core Concept: The system involves two key positions:
- Base 1: The initial defensive positioning immediately after the ball crosses the net to the opponent's side. Everyone on the court must know their Base 1 position. This is your starting point, ready for any play.
- Base 2: The adjusted defensive positioning based on reading the opponent's play (the set, the hitter's approach, etc.). Base 2 positions will vary slightly depending on the coach's preferences, but this simulation focuses on the fundamental principles.
- Rule 1: Be in Base 1 on the Opponent's First Touch. As soon as the ball crosses the net, every player must immediately move to their designated Base 1 position. This ensures you're ready for anything.
-
Rule 2: Read the Play. After the opponent's first touch,
actively read the play. Assess the quality of the pass.
Anticipate:
- A free ball
- A setter dump
- A specific type of attack (OH, MH, RS, Backrow)
- Rule 3: Transition to Base 2 Before the Hitter Contacts the Ball. Based on your read of the play (Rule 2), move to your Base 2 position before the hitter makes contact. This proactive movement is crucial for anticipating the attack and being in the right place to dig. At higher levels of play, the tempo is faster, making this anticipation even more critical.
Instruction:
- Click each attack type (OH, MH, RS, Backrow) to see Base 1 and Base 2 positions.
- Memorize your Base 1 and Base 2 positions.
- Move quickly (have about 0.5 seconds) from Base 1 to Base 2.
- Identify your color-coded coverage area.
- In Base 2, react to either a hit or a tip. 1st priority-get all the ball up when directly come to you.
- If you are not in base 2 position before the hitter contacts the ball, stop moving when they hit.
